The Flow3r Badge caught my interest the second I laid eyes on it. It has so many possible uses and my first idea for it was a Tamagotchi like game which I instantly started developing with my partner.
But as I used the badge more I saw an opportunity with it, to use it in my work. Children love quirky gadgets and the Flow3rs aestethic looks and colorful leds quickly caught their interest as I took the badge out of my bag. I let them explore the music apps and a game my friend has made, SpedenSpelit. Having a game where you can train your eye hand coordination and reflexes is very nice. And that lead me to want to develop a game where children can learn colours while training the before mentioned skills.
And thats how the idea for the small game came to be. A game where the leds are always on signifying the position for the colors, the screen gives you a color and you have to press the petal assigned to it.
The project had been on my mind for a bit before the opportunity to code it finally came. A long train ride to Helsinki! Forced to sit on my ass for hours with nothing to do! The perfect time to code something simple.
I learned a lot of new things about classes while making this and I’m so happy with how everything turned out! Tho with working in a train for hours I did not take any breaks as I was way too focused to do that. I did get food delivered in front of me and the bathroom was close but real breaks were very few.
And that can be seen from the code. The game still says ”press X to play” as I forgot to change the x to the button I assigned.. The colour it randomly assigns can be the same as before leading to very confusing gaming experiences if it lands on the same one multiple times. These are all things I will fix, when I have the time..
There are also upgrades I wan’t to make! Adding a timed mode option that I purposfully left out as having a timer was something I didn’t want with smaller children I work with. But with older children or with adults it can be very fun to beat your highscore! I also would love to add a small animation with a dancing cat or something to congratulate you for playing the game.
The projects code can be found here.
